Georgia Straight Jazz Society is presenting a most exciting concert on December 14th at The Little Red Church when one of Canada's greatest jazz vocalists will present a variety of jazz, soul and blues music. The event is further heightened by her accompanying musicians: Karel Rossingh, piano; Joey Smith, bass, and Damian Graham, drums. This is a seasonal event to celebrate the final show of our calendar year, but it is not a Christmas show. Rather, you will bask in the glow of rich, heartwarming and inspiring music, performed by an unparalleled group. In addition, making this wonderful show available at an affordable price is our way of saying "Thank You" to so many people who have continued to support the non-profit jazz society through the post-COVID transition.
Since no food or beverages will be served, you are encouraged to bring your own food and drink. Doors open at 7:00 pm and jazz starts at 7:30 pm. Admission by ticket. 2024 Memberships ($25) will be for sale at the door. Dear fellow jazz lovers, this is to inform you that due to low attendance at the Little Red Church, the Board finds it untenable to continue mounting our shows at The Little Red Church. We may still use the Little Red Church from time to time, for larger musical groups. However, the majority of our ensembles are Trios, Quartets and Quintets, which are well suited to a smaller venue. Therefore, following a unanimous decision by the GSJS Board on Nov. 6, 2023 we have decided to move our location from the Little Red Church to The High Tide Pub on 5th Street in Courtenay, effective January 11th, 2024. (Note: The January 4th show has been cancelled entirely). Our last performance at the LIttle Red Church will be the Maureen Washington Show, on Thursday, December 14th, doors open 7pm and downbeat is 7:30pm. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOUDue to limitations in staffing, the shows at The High Tide Pub will run from 7 to 9 pm. Settling of restaurant bills will be at 7:45 during the intermission to allow servers to end their shift at 8pm. However, drinks may still be obtained at the bar in the second half of the show, between 8pm and 9pm. Sight-lines to the stage are excellent especially for the section nearest the stage which can hold 50 people. For now, the booths at the back will be reserved for regular patrons of the High Tide Pub. If you want to obtain a meal before the show, the pub is open all afternoon. You are welcome to arrive early and our Front of House Volunteers will find you between 6 and 7pm to collect the admission fee. You should know that, as a non-profit society, we strive to minimize our admission charges to encourage our supporters to experience wonderful live music, whilst reimbursing the musicians with almost all our income, except for fixed costs, minimal overheads, and a regular deposit into our annual bursary for post secondary music students.
