Georgia Straight Jazz Society is excited about presenting an exciting Toronto-based duo - Grammy nominated and Juno winning jazz artists appearing in Courtenay as one of the venues on their "Spinning out of Nothingness" tour of Western Canada. David Buchbinder on trumpet and David Restivo on keys.
These two Davids present an intimate concert of original jazz. As Buchbinder told me recently, "Our music draws on the tradition and a colorful palette of musical influences from around the World. The swing's the thing, for sure, but there's also room for Jewish, Arabic, Cuban, European Classical and Sufi accents."
Buchbinder and Restivo have been playing together for over a decade in and around Toronto and have just recently begun touring, recognizing that their deep musical connection is something they want to share with a wider audience.
"We share musical passions and personal roots, in Jewish and Italian New York City, Kansas City and St. Louis."
For the last three years Grammy-nominated Buchbinder - a masterful trumpeter known for his Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band and Juno-winning Odessa/Havana project - has been living on and off in New Orleans, which has definitely brought a new sound into the duo's performances. And Juno-nominated Restivo - recently relocated to Nelson, BC - is recognized as one of Canada's premier jazz pianists. Both compose music that is arresting, robust and deep in the tradition.
