Elaine Lakeman makes a return engagement with the Georgia Straight Jazz Society Thursday night at the Avalanche Pub, presenting a fabulous musical evening of original songs from her soon to be released album "Elena" as well as classic jazz standards. Her band features the father-son guitar duo of Lloyd and Myles English, along with Tasha Adams on bass and Adam Robertson on drums.

Recorded in the Dominican Republic, Victoria and Salt Spring Island, the new album is infused with strong Latin rhythms, memorable melodies, and enchanting lyrics. A skilled raconteur, Lakeman accompanies each song with a captivating short story that provides a broader subtext and deeper engagement for the listener.

Growing up in Alberta, Elaine Lakeman has worked internationally as a film actress and dancer. Her delicious voice evokes passion and warmth with a storytelling quality that is filled with a sense of wonder and hope. She renders vintage standards, featured on her debut album 'When It Rains,' in a style reminiscent of the great English female singers of the 60s and 70s, with such songs as 'Dream a Little Dream' and 'Good Morning Heartache.'

Leading the group on guitar, Lloyd English is also a composer, producer and author who shares many of the writing credits on the new album with Elaine. He recently wrote the background music for the TV show 'Holmes Makes It Right.'

Myles English grew up surrounded by music with both parents being professional musicians and educators. Having studied guitar since the age of 6, Myles is a master of the classic traditions of swing style and Jazz Minouche, and he is one of the few guitar players who uses a 7th string to add to the weight of bass lines.

The evening of songs and stories, old and new, with rich accompaniment, begins Thursday night at 7:30 at The Avalanche Pub
