Turboprop - Ernesto Cervini
Members $10 , non-members $12
And now Turboprop! To illustrate how our local jazz scene has risen to higher levels of the arts scene in Canada, Georgia Straight Jazz Society presents one of this country's great bands on tour, led by one of its great drummers, Ernesto Cervini.
From Turboprop's publicity page, "The tour starts in Toronto with 2 nights at the venerable Rex Hotel & Jazz Bar. This is followed by concerts in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Nanaimo, Courtenay, Regina and Calgary (in that order.)"
Courtenay, sitting amidst big cities across Western Canada! The wonderful thing is: we've reached the point where great bands are asking whether we can fit them into our calendar, and we're in the happy state of being able to select between local, regional, national and international acts during our 40 featured performances at The Avalanche Bar & Grill each (September to May) season.
Turboprop's new album "Abundance" was released on October 5th and it's been receiving rave reviews across the globe. This disc is appropriately entitled Abundance; appropriate because it is not only brimful with energy, but also seems to boil over in that department - a wonderfully focused ensemble. Raul daGama - Toronto Music Report
With a very apt title, Turboprop's latest release is a sheer delight for lovers of pure and classic jazz.An entertaining and flawless production that will reverberate with each listen.
Marty Delia - The Jazz Music Blog
In addition to Ernesto, Turboprop is composed of Tara Davidson - Alto Saxophone; Matt Lagan - Tenor Saxophone; William Carn - Trombone; Adrean Farrugia - Piano, and Artie Roth - Bass.
So, this is your opportunity to experience some of the best jazz music from the contemporary jazz scene. If you're new to Comox Valley, you might want to come on down and discover the amazing music (and social) scene this Thursday. What makes it even more delightful is that, despite all the chatter before and after the show, the audience has adopted a culture of near silence and appreciation, mixed with deserved applause, while the musicians are performing. We're told repeatedly by visiting musicians that this quality alone makes us quite unique on the jazz scene, and it demands a higher level of concert. We look forward to seeing you there.
You are reminded that tickets for Maureen Washington's December 20 Christmas Show will be on sale at jazz this Thursday. Subsequently, tickets will be for sale at Bop City in Courtenay. If you plan on seeing this wonderful show, don't delay!
Browse the Calendar page of our website for more information about the 2018 fall season's 16 jazz performances, and the 38 scheduled concerts in the forthcoming year 2019. That way, you will quickly realize why Courtenay has become a significant performance destination on the Canadian jazz scene.
