Patrick Courtin

Members $10 , non-members $12

After last week's terrific show by Toronto-based musicians in the Ethan Ardelli Quartet, we're excited to be showcasing more of our young regional jazz performers when Patrick Courtin brings his trio for his CD release concert.

The Nanaimo-based group (with Marisha Devoin, bass and James McRae, drums) will play their much-loved jazz standards and original tunes. Marisha and James are two of Patrick's favourite Vancouver Island jazz musicians. Most recently, in August Patrick invited them up to his second home of Wells, BC to perform a trio concert at the Sunset Theatres, where Patrick works as Musical Director at Barkerville's Theatre Royal.

Back in January they recorded Patrick's debut album in Nanaimo with Rick Salt recording, mixing and mastering. Patrick is proud to have produced the entire album locally! Nanaimo-based artist Nicholas May did the artwork and cover design, and Nanaimo-based Vinyl Record Guru did the CD pressing. The band has performed dozens of shows together, not just as a trio but in musical theatre (including Chemainus) as well as part of various rhythm sections for many different groups. Together they have workshopped and performed James McRae's "Impressions of Lightfoot" project - jazz adaptations of the music of Gordon Lightfoot.

Their sound is an exciting exploration of the tradition of the jazz piano trio, with roots in swing jazz but with hints of blues and Latin as well. They play their own exciting arrangements of songs from all facets of jazz combining old and new together in a joyful celebration of musical communication. Thursday's show will feature special guest vocalist and tapper Lindsay Sterk - a Courtney local - and Patrick is very exciting to bring him to the line-up to add extra excitement to the evening.

Lindsay has performed and taught throughout Canada. He has been owner and Artistic Director of Pantuso Dance for the past ten years in Courtenay where his school was awarded Small Business of the Year by the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce.

You are reminded that tickets for Maureen Washington's December 20 Christmas Show will be on sale at jazz this Thursday. Subsequently, tickets will be for sale at Bop City in Courtenay. If you plan on seeing this wonderful show, don't delay!

Browse the Calendar page of our website for more information about the 2018 fall season's 16 jazz performances, and the 38 scheduled concerts in the forthcoming year 2019. That way, you will quickly realize why Courtenay has become a significant performance destination on the Canadian jazz scene.
