The Dime Notes
Members $10 , non-members $12
The Dime Notes dig back into the blues-drenched sounds of clarinet-driven 1920s New Orleans jazz, unearthing a repertoire of stomps, blues, and forgotten gems of the era from musicians such as Johnny Dodds, Jelly Roll Morton and Red Nichols. Offering a fresh take on a timeless style, emphasizing the propulsive grooves and sultry melodies which made early jazz revolutionary, controversial, and wildly popular.
The band grew out of a duo project when American pianist Andrew Oliver arrived in London in 2013 and met clarinetist David Horniblow. They got together to play some Jelly Roll Morton tunes and began a weekly residency at an east London cocktail bar, working on a repertoire of obscure 1920s tunes.
After a year or so, the duo expanded with the addition of the unstoppable pulse of London's finest rhythm guitarist, Dave Kelbie, and a young bassist, Louis Thomas, who added a new dimension and depth to the band. The Dime Notes quickly became popular both at clubs and swing dances in London.
Since the release of their debut album on Lejazzetal Records, the band has toured extensively in the UK, with appearances at festivals and theatres throughout the country as well as in France and the Netherlands. Soon to be re-released in France, their album has received outstanding press reviews both nationally and internationally. "Inspired," wrote the Sunday Times.
The Comox Valley jazz community is fortunate to be treated to a Dime Notes Concert before the quartet returns to major UK and European venues.
