Indigo Jazz
Members $10, non-members $12
After last week's memorable and spirited concert, Thursday Night Jazz at the Av sets a mellow romantic tone this week, when Indigo Jazz gives regards to Broadway.
Fronted by the oh-so-popular vocalist Dale Graham, this local quintet includes John Hyde on bass, Rick Husband on guitar, Jay Havelaar on trumpet and Tom Timsley on drums.
New York's Broadway musicals have long been a rich source of material for jazz musicians. Start with powerful melodies and rich chords, and you have material robust enough for players to reimagine and reinterpret. In keeping with that tradition, Indigo Jazz will have their way with a whole range of Broadway favourites!
West Side Story, Oklahoma, South Pacific, My Fair Lady, Music Man, Pal Joey, Kiss Me Kate, each will contribute a song or two to the night's entertainment. Fiddler On The Roof will move from Russia to Cuba, rhythmically speaking. And the quintet will venture into the 21st century with a song from the 2006 production Grey Gardens.
Some songs are far better known than the musicals from which they sprang, "Never Will I Marry" was a hit recording for Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley, several years after its musical Greenwillow had a dismal run on Broadway. "Some Other Time" is irretrievably linked with Bill Evans' piano.
