Jo and the Bros
Admission is $10 for society members, $12 for non-members.
Next Thursday's jazz at The Avalanche Bar is a continuation of performances by regional musicians. One of the wonderful dividends of the evolution of jazz in this area is the increasing number of wonderful musicians who are settling here because of the vibrant music scene. Headed up by the well-known Arrowsmith Big Band drummer, Michael Wright, we have the pleasure of listening to him perform in his own trio called Jo and the Bros; a group of artists new to our stage.
The band is fronted by Duncan-based pianist and vocalist Jo Deslippe. As she said recently, "Well, they're not my brothers exactly, but they are very much my brothers in jazz music." Jo moved five years ago from Stratford, Ontario, where she had played for the Stratford Festival for 20 years and performed in several bands.
The rhythm section comprises bassist Neil Baird, originally from Salmon Arm, but currently based in Victoria, and Michael Wright from Nanaimo.
Michael told us in a recent interview, "We will be performing songs from the Great American Songbook via Antonio Carlos Jobim and Bill Evans to Theolonius Monk. The band brings a fresh, new twist to the material through Jo's innovative piano stylings and rich, warm vocals."
Our new performance year has rocketed to a wonderful start, with terrific attendances and many new society memberships. One thing we have noted is the high proportion of new members who are fresh residents in the Comox Valley, who have become excited to discover the vibrant jazz scene. So if you're a recent addition to the Valley community and looking for new social footholds in your new home community, please come on down to The Avalanche Bar on Eighth Street and see what a friendly crowd and great live jazz awaits you. You'll be made comfortable and welcome in no time! And you will discover the excitement of live jazz music.
Tickets for Marc Atkinson who will be performing for us on October 13th are now available for sale at the front desk.
