September 1st at 7:30pm - The Usual Suspects
Admission is $10 for society members, $12 for non-members.
Summer rushes into autumn, and as it does the anticipation of a new season of great jazz commences. Visit the "Calendar" page to see the complete and amazing line-up of acts booked for the 2016-17 performance year. Thursday Night Jazz at the Avalanche Bar is headed for another blockbuster season, and if you're not already one of the people who have discovered the vibrant Courtenay jazz scene, reckoned by many to be the best of Vancouver Island, why not mark your personal calendar for regular attendances each Thursday? A friendly warm greeting awaits newcomers to our activities, and you will discover a significant facet of what living in our community can bring to your artistic interests.
The 2016-17 season opens with a gathering of fine local musicians - Usual Suspects of Jazz - some of whom soon look forward to new experiences beyond the local jazz scene, as they enter the wider world of jazz music. These are familiar performers to regular jazz fans in our region who will soon become cruise ship musicians, and others who will journey afar to perform in places well south of our valley of jazz.
Autumn is a time of contemplation that brings much loved melodies, and the band has made a selection of seasonal favourites to start the year, including swing, samba, Latin, and ballads.
Regulars know the Usual Suspects who will grace the Avalanche stage: Grahame Edwards, bass; Jeff Agopsowicz, trombone; Jay Havelaar, trumpet; Paoul Gagnon, keyboard, and Bill Street on drums. What you don't know are the guests who have been invited to participate in this opener. To find out, you'll have to be there. Admission prices are unchanged: $10 for members and $12 for non members, so it's still the most reasonably priced entertainment on offer!
Please join all of us in Georgia Straight Jazz Society: Board members, Volunteers, and regular members, and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of the wonderful staff at the Avalanche Bar and Grill.
Welcome to the New Season.
