Christmas Gift for a Jazz Lover Looking for a gift a jazz lover will love? Here's one you can't get quite yet, but you can give the promise . . . In December, Rhino Handmade Records is releasing a 5-CD boxed set tribute to Nesuhi Ertegun. He's the man who brought jazz to Atlantic Records in the mid '50s, introducing musicians like Charles Mingus, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Milt Jackson, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Laverne Baker, Keith Jarrett, Joe Turner . . . an amazing list. From Jazz Times Magazine: Hommage À Nesuhi contains 61 songs recorded between 1955-76 that spotlight the musicians Ertegun assembled to make the Atlantic jazz catalog the singular body of work it is. The music is arranged thematically on the five discs: Some Atlantic Jazz, Shades of Blue, Live, On the Edge and Some More Atlantic Jazz. The collection comes packaged in a deluxe 10” x 10” slipcase containing an 84-page hardcover book as well as a portfolio of 19 photo cards, each featuring a previously unpublished image of an Atlantic jazz artist taken by legendary photographer Lee Friedlander. Read the whole article, including a song/artist list >> Jazz Festivals When the weather turns chilly it's pleasant to imagine being somewhere tropical, and even more pleasant if there's good jazz involved. There are great jazz festival in the Caribbean a lot of which, not surpisingly, take place this time of year. A sampling: Mayan Riviera Jazz Festival ~ November, Mexico's east coast Plans for next winter . . .? |
